This section provides supplementary disaster-specific safety information, in support of the safety and security work of UNDSS.

United Nations Department of Safety and Security

The UN Department of Safety and Security is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the security management system to enable the safest and most efficient conduct of the programmes and activities of the United Nations System.

Please note that: All UN and associated personnel currently stationed in a duty station/mission in a Security Phase I or higher location are required to complete the interactive learning programme entitled “Advanced Security in the FieldE(ASITF) as of 1 April 2007. UN and associated personnel traveling to a duty station/mission in a Security Phase I or higher location are required to complete the programme prior to arrival.

The UNDSS Security in the Field booklet is available for download in the following languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Arabic.

Supplementary safety information for disaster risk areas

The American Red Cross: Disaster Services public information campaign provides excellent background disaster safety information. This information targets home and family safety in disaster risk areas in the United States, however much of it could also be useful for preparing house and office premises for disaster risks in the field. Information is available in English and Spanish.
