Inter-Agency Contingency Planning: Concepts & Process (IASC Sub WG on Preparedness and Contingency Planning)
The pilot workshop of the OCHA Disaster Preparedness Planning Training (DPPT) workshop was held in May 2008. The workshop's objective was the strengthening and systematising of the capacity of OCHA staff to be able to support disaster preparedness planning processes with Governments, inter-agency country teams at the country level and at the regional level to support the implementation of Priority 5 of the Hyogo Framework for Action, "strengthening preparedness for effective response at all levels". Its further aimed at strengthening the capacity of OCHA staff to translate into practice OCHA's strategic objective 1.4 "Greater incorporation of risk reduction approaches and strengthened preparedness in humanitarian response [HFA priority 5]".
The training focussed on topics of disaster preparedness that OCHA staff need to be versatile on when supporting disaster preparedness planning processes. As such, the curriculum contained basic elements of preparedness specifically but not exclusively focussed on natural disasters. It included presentations of a range of existing internal and external tools for preparedness and discussed their usage. It also gave the opportunity for OCHA staff from the different regions and countries to share valuable experiences of their country level work in preparedness.
Here is some of the material (mostly presentations) used for the workshop. Should you wish to receive more detailed information, such as session sheets, or other, please contact OCHA-EPS.
This training package is available under the following internal link.
This is a 60 to 90-minute training module prepared by the IASC Sub Working Group on Preparedness and Contingency Planning in June 2008. It is intended to provide an introduction to Inter-Agency Contingency Planning, drawing directly from the Inter-Agency Contingency Planning Guidelines for Humanitarian Assistance. The session is designed as an inter-active module that can be integrated into larger training modules. You will find a) the facilitator's notes, b) an exercise, and c) a powerpoint presentation.
